A very pleasant fishing town with excellent view across the étang to Sète. It has a covered market square and old town with very narrow streets, like a maze. This was once a fortified town, a bit like Aigues Mortes, and most of the houses are built from the stone taken from the old walls. The famous aperitif wine "Noilly Prat" is made in the port, just 2 minutes walk from the boat. The cellars offer a very interesting tour, and tasting.
Is this place famous for anything?
Noilly Prat is a dry vermouth whch has been made in the south of France for around 200 years. In 1813 Jospeh Noilly first came up with the idea and it was his son and son in law, Claudius Prat who effectively started the famous company in in 1855. The vermouth is made from white wine, aged in casks exposed to the sun and wind for 12 months and then infused with a secret blend of 20 herbs and spices for 3 weeks. Gustave Eiffel (of Eiffel tower fame) was commissioned to design a staircase for the company's headquarters and the initials he incorporated into the staircase later became the famous Noilly Prat logo. Today it remains one of the most famous vermouths in the world.
