The Classic Midi Cruise

Canal du Midi, France

Reviews for the The Classic Midi Cruise

Two full weeks and a one way cruise gave us freedom to roam wherever the mood of the day dictated or to loiter if we wished. Having explored delightful Carcassonne for five hours between the airport and our taxis to Homps we only went upstream as far as Trebes. This proved to be something of a baptism of fire for the two lady members of the crew who had to learn how to throw a coiled rope three or four metres vertically upward at each of the fourteen locks. A night there and then downhill which proved to be much easier rope-wise, passing Homps again and visiting the villages that we missed on the way up and with the exception of detours to Narbonne, Port Ariane (Montpellier) and Beaucaire the rest of the holiday was all downstream.
We saw fewer canal boats than I expected often with periods of twenty minutes having the glorious scenery to ourselves and regularly being the only boat in a lock. Many of the small villages sadly lacked their own individual shops and made do with a mini-supermarket; however wonderful traditional markets were found in Narbonne, Marseillan and Beaucaire. The scenery among the plane trees on The Midi was stunning, good local wine was readily available and some of the best was purchased from the Winery-cum Restaurant in Capestang. Forserannes staircase was awesome; the little towns on the shores of Etang de Thau Lake were attractive with good seafood. The flamingos and the white horses enlivened the long straight stretches in The Camargue. I especially recommend visits to Marseillan and Meze on The Etang, and if you venture into The Camargue to Montpellier via Port Ariane, to The Maguelonne Cathedral and above all the most wonderful walled city that I have ever seen at Aigues-Mort.
The canals and small villages were beautiful.
Stopped in the different villages/towns and enjoyed the food and wines
The boat was brilliant..We booked a smaller boat, but was offered the Mystique 4..Quite a big boat for 2, but with our experience it was not a problem..The Midi is always an experience. We went here first time in 94, and came back 10 times since..I cannot say what is most memorable, all of the french waterways are memorable..In the beginning we came here with 3 generations in 2 boats, but the last 3 years was only wife and I...we did most of the waterways, but Midi is the best..even with less trees to come..
We stopped for the night in Agde, Marseillan, Villeneuve de Beziers, Columbiers, Capestang, Le Somail and finally Homps..All of these places are nice and with good restaurants...
Great fishing while waiting for lock gates and overnight mooring.
The staircase was scary for a first timer but really funny. Embarrassing though being watched by 100's of tourists. Every overnight I enjoyed the walk du pain! I was the bread walker.
