The Lot Valley Cruise

Lot River, France

Reviews for the The Lot Valley Cruise

We travelled as a couple. It was our second cruise.
Highly recommended, despite the need to retrace our route to return to the same base. The scenery is superb, and the river makes for more interesting boating than does the usual canal trip. Cirque Lapopie is the undoubted highlight; it is exquisite. But Cahors is also fascinating, and the market there is not to be missed.

I had travelled on 'canal' boats previously, and wanted to share the experience with a group of close friends who hadn't.
We loved the experience of river cruising, along with the unusual (and sometimes challenging) task of going through locks. The Lot scenery was very special, and the town of St-Cirq-Lapopie was our favourite, despite the huge thunderstorm.

We had 6 on the trip - my husband and I, a female friend and 3 relatives - my 15 year old nephew, his mother and her sister. We loved the times we spent eating dinner on top of the Calypso during the lovely evenings - Also loved going into the towns along the way - purchasing food and just walking around - Best stop was on a Sunday afternoon in town of Caix. With directions from a man in one of the wine shops, we walked up a short hill to the road leading to the Queen of Denmark's summer castle. The Queen was not yet in Residence but we passed by her impeccable vineyards under a blue sunny sky. When we returned to the town - two local women were waiting with the key to the town/s 12th century church - we had tried to get in to the church earlier but it was locked. The man in the wine shop called the women who drove to get the key from the Housekeeper - Although this was the smallest church we saw throughout the trip, it was the most lovely and lovingly cared for.
We loved the small towns the best - the ones with very few people around - However, we did like Cahors - the old part of town was charming - especially the secret gardens - the one behind the Cathedral is the best. We thought St. Cirq Poppie was lovely but way too crowded with tourists who must drive there. In Bouzies, we were able to call for a taxi and all of us went to see The "Peche-Merle" cave with Prehistoric Drawings. Amazing - well worth the time away from the boat.

This was our fourth cruise with Le Boat. Our family, who were with us on the first cruise on the Midi and Aquitaine canals, some 14 year's ago, were the same group, only the young children are now adults. As our skipper is an experienced driver, we chose The Lot River this time, and it was a geat experience. The weather was hot, the river was clean and cool for swimming, the locks kept everyone fit, and the scenery was spectacular.
We were lucky enough to be in Cahors, and tied up close to the Pont Valentre bridge, for the night of the fireworks display celebrating Bastille Day. Cahors on market day was exciting. We walked the 5 kilometers to the prehistoric cave at Pech-Merle and the tour was well worth the walk. We tied up for the night below the Chateau at Calvignac and visited the chateau in the morning. A nephew of the family guided the tour which made it a very personal and interesting experience. St Cirq Lapopie should not be missed. The scenery was spectacular.
