The Auxerre Short Break

Nivernais, France

Reviews for the The Auxerre Short Break

The most lazy and relaxing of all holidays. Thank you Le Boat.
There are a lot of locks along this route, all are either manned by a keeper or are automatic - so they're really easy - but after a while the constant stopping can be a bit of a nuisance. However, they are great places to chat and swap stories with fellow boaters and we made a few friends also journeying down the river. Auxerre was fascinating - a bustling town with old timbered buildings and impressive cathedrals. Don't miss Cravant - out favourite little French village - very picturesque. We strolled around all morning and took loads of pictures.
We planned to cruise to north Sens and return to Migennes, but the river was closed due to flooding. So Plan B was the Canal du Bourgogne. It was pretty, but when the river opened south, we retraced our route and went south on the river to Auxerre. Memorable experiences were riding our bikes on the tow path south from Auxerre where the river is so beautiful. Also Auxerre is a very interesting and beautiful town with many old cathedrals, great restaurants and plenty of shopping.
Definitely stop for a couple of nights at Auxerre and explore.
