The Lough Derg Short Break

Reviews for the The Lough Derg Short Break

It was our first ever cruise so we were a bit nervous. Fortunately we got excellent instructions from the staff in Portumna base. We cruised downriver and spent the night in Terryglass. The following morning we headed to the Ballina, explored the town and had lunch before heading up the lake again to moor for the night in Mountshannon. The next day we headed off to Dromineer and then moored in Garrykennedy. Our last day was spent exploring Portumna castle before heading back to base.
The lake itself is very beautiful, although a little scary in choppy weather! The best place to moor was Terryglass which had all the facilities advertised on the IWAI chart. The pub there serves the best seafood chowder in Ireland! Ballina has a gourmet fishmongers which also does fish and chips! Don't miss this even though it is a little bit hidden up the hill. Mountshannon is quiet but the Sunday market there is charming. Lough Derg house in Dromineer is a nice place to hang out for coffee and cake. Eco friendly accomodation which is a haven for various sailors. This included a group of Germans who were stranded because of a run of very stormy weather! Finally, don't miss Portumna castle which is one of the first fortified country houses ever built in Ireland. Lovely gardens and grounds.
The cold! We went in October and it was colder than I experienced on the Shannon ever before. No heating system on board would have adequately. We loved the trip and revisiting all the places we visited on previous occasions. The stillness that accompanied the cold on that trip made it all worthwhile. The Shannon at its best.
We visited terry glass on the first night then domineer and garrykennedy overnight then up to banagher. Shrouded in fog. We fished and walked in forest trails in Garrykennedy (recommended). And music in the pubs at night was also a highlight.
