Wildlife

On Lot River cruises, you might see golden eagles, red kite hawks, golden orioles and singing nightingales. Cute otters play along the banks. The Lot Valley is home to colorful rare orchids and an abundance of butterflies!

Fishing

Try night fishing for wild carp on designated sections of the Lot River. You can catch some really big ones! Black bass are also a popular catch when river boat fishing on the Lot. Roach, rudd, perch, pike and zander haunt these waters too!

Swimming

The Lot is great for river swimming! Crystal clear (but often chilly) waters invite you to take a dip on a hot summer day. After that, relax with a cool drink!

Watersports

Canoeing and kayaking on the Lot River is a popular watersport vacation pursuit! Why not tie up and rent a canoe or kayak for a pleasant afternoon poking along the river and getting close to Nature?

Please note that the river Lot cruising season lasts from 1st April-31st October 2019, and then from 1st April-31st October 2020.

Rising from the Cévennes Mountains, the Lot River, the 7th longest in France, meanders 491 kilometres (305 miles) through fertile valleys and gorges cut through limestone plateaus before merging with the Garonne River near Aiguillon. The water follows the contours of the land, creating deep loops and easy bends that are pleasing to your senses as you go. In fact, one of the beauties of a barge vacation on the Lot River is that you get to follow a natural watercourse.

As a mountain river, the Lot has very few major tributaries as it flows west past age-old cities and towns — Mende, Capdenac, Cajac and Cahors. As you can see at a glance on a River Lot map, the most significant one is the Truyère, which is dammed to produce hydroelectric power. The Lot River drains a basin of about 11,400 square kilometres (4,400 miles).

The Lot River once was navigable for much of its length, spawning the growth of villages and towns throughout the valley. However, the river was closed to navigation in 1926 and the lock system fell into disrepair. Then, in 1989, work began on opening the upper section, which is the one you’ll explore, a stretch extending 72 kilometres (45 miles) from Luzech to Larnagol. In 2001, a lower section of the Lot from Aiguillon to the vicinity of St. Vite opened for business.

Access to shore power on the Lot is severely restricted. The river is sometimes subject to flooding, which would require us to transfer you to another base.

Take a look at our waterway and lock closures page to keep up to date with the cruising conditions across all of our regions.

There are no lock keepers on the River Lot, and all the locks are manual and user-operated. Locks are fun and operation is simple, but we recommend that at least two members of you crew have a good level of fitness.

Couples travelling alone should allow extra time for slower progress and should be mindful that one person will have to operate both gates at each lock by themselves, while the other drives the boat. Most couples choose to wait for another boat, so they can travel through locks together and share the effort required. There are 17 locks on the upper River Lot. Should you have any questions or difficulties, Le Boat is at hand to provide you with helpful advice.

Opening hours: Locks open every day from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

Public holidays: Locks are open on holidays in this region. All locks closed on: 1st November.

You can moor in ports. However, there are also some lovely country mooring areas on the river away from villages that will give you a chance to enjoy the solitude of the Lot Valley. Some have picnic tables. Moor with the bow facing the current, and run lines to keep the stern off to prevent the boat from going aground if the water level lowers during the night.

The river lot schedule is such that one cannot fully make use of all the markets available on different days, we needed to stay over 1 extra day in cahors to be able to get to at least the one market in Cahors on Saturday. Mooring only in the towns - a slight problem due to vehicles and trains noises, if mooring can be anywhere such as in canals, one can stop over at very quite locations. Staff very professional and friendly. The River LOT location, towns and environment -- excellent Excellent nature and environment, beautiful small villages

The support and service from the team was excellent. We were a little disappointed that on our first day the boat wasn't ready til 5pm even though we arranged to pick it up at 2pm. We had perishable food with us that was sitting in the heat of the day. One of the maintenance guys saw us all sitting in the sun and went and got us a table umbrella, very thoughtful. The boat was fantastic, extremely comfortable. It is a very large boat and the joy stick made it very easy to maneuver.During the week we had an unexpected issue with the boat and the Le Boat team ( John Baptiste, Angelique, and Caroline) were fantastic. Extremely responsive, prompt and most helpful. Their follow up during the trip was outstanding. We spoke very little French and there English was excellent. This was our third boat trip and our first with Le Boat. We can't praise the Douelle team more highly.

Very good, except that they were unaware we had small children, despite my completing their pre cruise form and advising them by e-mail, fortunately we had brought our own lifejackets. We had a bit of an issue with sufficient fuel, we had enough but only just. I know we used the generator a lot, but it was during the recent heatwave and we needed the air conditioning below as the baby would have suffered. Overall though a good holiday. Some of the best scenery, the river Lot had long been an aim and I’m glad we did it.

We were given the wrong bus-stop for our arrival. We were advised our boat had pump-out - but it didn't - so we wasted time looking for the place to attach the pump-out hose. Lock-working system not adequately explained. Cirrus B had a fan fitted, but Sheba didn't. We enjoyed our first river cruising even more than our five previous holidays canal cruising.

Friendly people. Good instruction. Only issue, which was a big one, was a major delay with us getting the boat after we arrived. Arrived at 3pm and only got the boat after 6pm. Minimal apology and no thought to a possible later check out when returning. Other than that, had a great time! Loved the boat. Comfortable, clean, modern. The Lot River was very special with awesome towns along the way.
