Lovely location of river and canals
We were welcomed by a friendly host who took two of our party to a nearby lock to learn how to operate it, while a colleague introduced us to our boat, before taking the whole party on a brief familiarisation trip to understand the controls.
Nice base for boating with very friendly and helpful staff!
Everyone at St Jean de Losne were above and beyond nice and helpful. They were going to call us a cab when we arrived in St Jean by train but a staff member just came and picked us up! The gentleman that showed us around the boat was excellent as well. In Branges, the women helping us check out was so nice and professional, can’t speak highly enough of her. The other staff in Branges were, oddly, not helpful. It’s traditional in any dockside setting to help those in need of a hand when coming into dock, even if aren’t working but just people sharing the dock. These guys (who are employed by Le Boat) just sat smiling as we came in to an unfamiliar harbor in the pouring rain and didn’t lift a hand to help. Then told us, after we were tied up that we’d tied up in the wrong place and told us to move. As I said, very odd considering how great everyone else from Le Boat was with us on our trip.

The staff were phenomenal at both of the bases and the boat was amazing. Classy, spacious, maintained, and most importantly CLEAN .
Le Boat staff described a northern cruise and a southern cruise to us. We selected the northern cruise but in retrospect would have selected the southern cruise as there would have been more towns and less wilderness. This was our decision and not a criticism of the Le Boat staff.
The staff were friendly and efficient. The hand-over was also good. The secure parking was adequate.
The wines of Burgundy are by far the best worldwide – there’s nothing to compare to them with the sole exception of some Rhone vineyards. Visiting this gem of Europe by boat delivers encounters and experience with people appreciating an entire cosmos of history, products of farming as Bresse poultry, Charolais beef, Morvan pork and cathedrals from Roman to Gothic period amid pictoresque cities with half-timbered houses. The canals allow to be there in the hot spots of interest offering utmost comfort at the same time and having immediate contact with people and culture – really the perfect holidays!

- Pont-de-Vaux: Take the 3.5km long canal which will lead you to Pont-de-Vaux town. The town hall houses a small museum with local artists’ paintings. Behind the harbour master’s office there’s the House of Water and Nature, with exhibitions dedicated to wildlife and the environment, with multimedia displays that children will love. Try your hand at fishing at the lake, south of the port – day fishing licences are available at the Tourist Office.
- Mâcon: Mâcon is one of the oldest cities in France, and the capital of southern Burgundy. Despite its age, it was badly damaged during the religious wars so few relics of its past remain. One of its marvels is the Maison de Bois, built between 1490 and 1510, and certainly the most famous house in the city. Its wooden façade is decorated with a multitude of statuettes of monkeys and men. Stroll through the city and you’ll see St. Pierre church. Stop to admire its elegant twin spires which dominate over the town.

You’re a fan of history, and in this part of Burgundy you can’t resist poking about the museum honouring Napoleon Bonaparte in Auxonne. He attended artillery school in this lovely city in 1788, prepping for his future escapades. - Auxonne: Sometimes referred to as the “jewel of the Saone valley”, or ” the second capital of Haute-Saône”, Auxonne was a strategically important fortified town in the middle ages. Nowadays, it is a market town.

Close to the Doubs River, there’s a lake with a sandy beach, water slide, children’s playground, and volleyball and petanque courts.
